Cambodian Chess: Ouk Chaktrang and Rek

This article explores two traditional Cambodian chess games: Ouk Chaktrang and Rek.

Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ) is the most common type. The name "Ouk" is onomatopoeic, mimicking the sound of chess pieces on the board during a check. In gameplay, "Ouk" signifies a check, and must be announced by the checking player. "Chaktrang" is a formal term derived from the Sanskrit "Chaturanga" (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting the game's Indian origins.

Unlike international chess, Ouk Chaktrang often involves teams of players, adding excitement to the social aspect of the game. Cambodian men frequently play in barbershops or cafes. The objective remains the same: checkmating the opponent's king. The starting player is determined by mutual agreement, with the loser of the previous game typically going first. Draws result in another agreement on who starts the next game.
