Nintendo GameCube titles join Nintendo Switch Online with the Switch 2 launch, accompanied by a new classic controller. However, fine print suggests the Switch 2 GameCube controller is officially designed solely for GameCube games.
Noticed in the UK trailer for the Switch 2 GameCube controller (credit to VGC), a note states: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies the controller will function fully only with GameCube titles on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, not other Switch 2 games.
VGC points out that similar disclaimers on other Nintendo controllers haven’t always been strictly enforced, with players finding ways to use retro controllers elsewhere. Notably, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America trailer.
Interestingly, the GameCube controller’s button layout supports many standard Switch 2 gameplay inputs. This restriction might be about managing expectations or preventing issues, like using the controller as a mouse.
For those uninterested in the new GameCube controller, Nintendo confirms the GameCube Controller adapter will connect via the Switch 2 dock’s USB port. Wii U-era adapter owners continue to benefit from this accessory.
The Classic GameCube controller for Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the console, though pre-order dates remain unconfirmed. U.S. tariffs have added uncertainty to pre-order availability.
This major Nintendo Switch Online update brings subscribers access to iconic 2000s titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, available at launch this summer. The library will grow over time, with teased additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.
