In more challenging news for Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's ambitious open-world title is reportedly being outsold by the 2023 hit, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Despite receiving largely positive early reviews upon its launch last August, Star Wars Outlaws has faced significant criticism from players regarding its combat and stealth mechanics. Ubisoft has attempted to address these concerns through subsequent updates, but these efforts have not fully satisfied the initial wave of disappointed players.
This situation has led to disappointing sales figures for the first truly open-world Star Wars title. In September, Ubisoft acknowledged that Star Wars Outlaws did not meet its sales expectations. The company's stocks experienced a sharp decline shortly after the game's release on August 27, 2024, which has fueled growing concerns about Ubisoft's future and even sparked discussions about taking the company private. Despite these setbacks, Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment remain hopeful that Star Wars Outlaws can regain its footing with the help of planned post-launch DLC.
A recent report by VGC and former GamesIndustry.biz journalist Christopher Dring has dealt another blow to these hopes, revealing that Star Wars Outlaws is not only underperforming but is also being outsold by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Respawn Entertainment’s single-player action sequel has managed to surpass Star Wars Outlaws in sales, though exact figures have not been disclosed. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws was recently ranked as the 47th best-selling video game of 2024.
Several factors may explain why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is outperforming Star Wars Outlaws. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a well-received sequel to Respawn’s successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which garnered acclaim upon its release in April 2023. Additionally, last year, EA and Respawn released an update for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS4 and Xbox One, which reignited interest in Cal Kestis’s adventure.
On the other hand, Star Wars Outlaws has struggled to capture a substantial audience, despite ongoing efforts from Massive Entertainment to enhance the game with updates and story DLCs. The first of these expansions, Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card, was released in November and featured Kay Vess teaming up with Lando Calrissian. Another DLC, Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune, is slated for release in Spring 2025 and will bring back the beloved character Hondo Ohnaka from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
