Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy's upcoming film in the iconic franchise is still on track, and we've got a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, adding, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." While details about the project remain largely under wraps, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Levy's film will take place in the future, specifically "post-[the first] nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the movie as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era, offering fans a new chapter in the Star Wars universe.
In an interview with Deadline, Kennedy also clarified that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she stated. Another intriguing detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star, adding to the anticipation surrounding this project. While fans might have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026 or even 2027 for its release, Tropper's optimistic words suggest that things are progressing well.
Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars releases since the less-than-stellar reception of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's schedule in November.
