The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Con detach, the tablet section visibly expands, transforming into a noticeably larger device. This substantial growth signals a departure from Nintendo's traditionally pocket-sized handhelds, embracing the larger portable console market alongside devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can offer a reasonable estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we handled a Switch 2 mock-up from peripheral maker Genki. Although unverified then, Nintendo's trailer shows remarkable similarity to the mock-up, suggesting our CES measurements are highly accurate.
So, how large is the Switch 2?
We estimate an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels), aligning with earlier 2024 rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display.
The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area. The Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in area. Even the larger Steam Deck (7-inch or 7.4-inch OLED) is smaller than the estimated Switch 2 display—approximately 8% and 11% smaller diagonally and in area, respectively.
The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Our CES measurements of the Genki mock-up, verified against the trailer, suggest a Switch 2 size of approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth appears similar to the original Switch.
The trailer suggests Joy-Con width remains similar, but height increases. Our estimate: 32mm wide and 115mm tall, a 13% increase over the originals.
Subtracting Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall, about 31% larger than the original. This allows for approximately 11mm side bezels and 8mm top/bottom bezels.
These are estimations. While based on the Genki mock-up, final dimensions may differ. However, we expect a console approximately 25% larger than the original.
