Nintendo Switch 2 Brings Major Quality-of-Life Upgrade With Second USB-C Port

Apr 04,2025 Author: Carter

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is now official, and with its announcement, we've gotten our first glimpse of the system. Along with the introduction of new Joy-Cons that double as a mouse thanks to their optical sensors, the Switch 2 brings a new design with a notable quality-of-life feature that might have been overlooked in the initial reveal trailer.

Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which featured a single USB-C port on the underside of the tablet, the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts two USB-C ports. This seemingly small change is significant because the original Switch's single port limitation often required users to purchase additional, sometimes unreliable, adapters to connect multiple accessories. These adapters occasionally posed a risk of damaging the console, as manufacturers struggled to match the Switch's unique USB-C specifications.

The original Nintendo Switch claimed to adhere to USB-C standards, but in reality, it used a custom specification that needed to be reverse-engineered for third-party docks and accessories to work safely. With the addition of a second USB-C port on the Switch 2, there's hope that Nintendo will fully embrace standard USB-C protocols, allowing for seamless integration with a wide range of accessories right out of the box. Given the advancements in USB-C technology, including support for high-speed data transfer and 4K display outputs via the Thunderbolt standard, the potential for enhanced connectivity is immense. You could even connect an external GPU to a small PC or laptop using this standard.

The USB-C standard has evolved significantly since 2017, and the inclusion of a second port on the Switch 2 suggests that Nintendo is ready to fully support this universal standard. This would enable a variety of connections, including external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power. The bottom port, likely used with Nintendo's official dock, might be more advanced to handle all these connections, while the top port could support fast charging, display outputs, and other accessories. This dual-port setup opens up the possibility of using external power banks alongside other accessories, significantly enhancing the user experience compared to the original console.

For more details on the Switch 2, including its mysterious C button, we'll need to wait until April 2, 2025, when Nintendo hosts its Switch 2 Direct presentation.
