Surprisingly, some players remain unaware of the shield's existence. It wasn't a launch-day feature, and for a time, running was our only defense. Crafting a shield is thankfully straightforward, requiring only a few readily available resources.

First, gather 6 wooden planks. These are easily created by placing logs in your inventory's crafting grid or using a crafting table.

Next, you'll need 1 iron ingot – a piece of iron ore smelted in a furnace.

To craft the shield, arrange the planks in a "Y" shape within the crafting grid, placing the iron ingot in the top-center slot.

And there you have it – your trusty shield, ready for action!

How to Find a Shield in the Game

While crafting is an option, you can also find shields in the game. Ironically, this often involves battling pillagers – ironically, without a shield. The reward? A banner to customize your shield and make it truly unique.

Why Do You Need a Shield?

In combat, the shield becomes an extension of yourself. Timely use can block up to 100% of damage from arrows and most melee attacks. Simply hold down the right mouse button to raise your shield. Imagine facing a horde of skeletons – their arrows will harmlessly bounce off your defense.
