Guy Ritchie is set to helm the sequel to Amazon MGM’s 2024 reboot of Road House, according to Variety. Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise his role as Elwood Dalton, the ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer.
Confirmation of a sequel came last May shortly after the remake’s successful March 2024 premiere. Road House garnered over 50 million views within its first two weekends on Prime Video, making it Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched original film debut globally at that time.
Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers) in 2024, the original film faced criticism from Liman himself due to its unexpected streaming release. He expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the movie was created for theatrical release, yet Amazon pivoted to streaming without proper compensation for the cast and crew.
Despite these concerns, Gyllenhaal clarified that Amazon had always intended Road House for streaming. This marks Ritchie and Gyllenhaal’s third collaboration for Amazon MGM, following their well-received 2023 war film Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. They are also working together on the upcoming action thriller In the Grey, featuring Henry Cavill, though that project lacks a confirmed release date.
Details about Road House 2 remain sparse, but the screenplay is being penned by Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F).
Currently, Ritchie’s plate is full. Besides directing several episodes of the recently launched Paramount+ series MobLand (starring Tom Hardy), he is also preparing the release of his next film, Fountain of Youth, arriving on Apple TV+ later this month.
