NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, signaling the end of its brief international journey. The game's services will cease on April 30th, 2025, with in-app purchases (IAPs) and downloads already disabled. Gran Saga, which enjoyed a successful launch in Japan back in 2021, only made its global debut in November 2024. Unfortunately, it managed to survive for just six months before the decision was made to shut down.
The closure appears to stem from financial instability and challenges in sustaining a viable service. Although Gran Saga initially impressed, it struggled to secure a stable position in the fiercely competitive global market. The genre is dominated by well-established games that have cultivated loyal player bases, making it extremely challenging for newcomers to break through without offering something truly innovative. Despite its early success in Japan, Gran Saga failed to replicate that momentum on the international stage, leading to its premature closure.

This closure adds to the increasing trend of gacha RPGs being discontinued. Just last month, I discussed the shutdown of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, which was not the only casualty. Numerous other titles have also succumbed to the pressures of an oversaturated market. With so many gaming options available, players tend to gravitate towards familiar titles, making it difficult for new or niche games to sustain long-term engagement.
For those who made recent purchases and are seeking refunds, you have until May 30th to submit your request. Please note, however, that refunds may not be possible if the purchased items have already been used or if there are other store-specific conditions.
