Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Weak Box Office Start

Snow White, directed by Marc Webb of The Amazing Spider-Man fame, faced a challenging start at the box office over its opening weekend. According to Comscore, the film earned $43 million domestically, marking it as the second highest-grossing film of 2025 so far, trailing only behind Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping this week's chart, its performance fell short of the $45 million debut of the live-action Dumbo from 2019 and did not meet expectations.

For perspective, other Disney remakes have seen significantly stronger openings. The Lion King (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Jungle Book (2016), and The Little Mermaid (2023) all surpassed the $100 million mark in their domestic opening weekends.

Internationally, Snow White had a similarly subdued launch, pulling in $44.3 million, leading to a global total of $87.3 million, as per Comscore estimates.

However, there's a glimmer of hope for Snow White. Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to Disney's The Lion King remake, started with a modest $35.4 million domestically but ultimately amassed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is undoubtedly hoping for a similar 'sleeper hit' success with Snow White, especially as questions continue to swirl around the performance of Captain America: Brave New World. After six weekends, Captain America has accumulated $400.8 million globally, with $192.1 million from the domestic market and $208.7 million from international markets.

IGN's review of Snow White awarded it a 7/10, noting: "Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry."
