DCU's The Authority Film Shelved Amid Challenges in Superhero Satire Landscape

Apr 19,2025 Author: Jonathan

It seems that the DCU movie The Authority is facing significant challenges, as confirmed by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as part of the ambitious Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot, The Authority was highlighted as a major project due to its focus on the notoriously brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe. However, during a recent DC Studios presentation, Gunn revealed that the film has been placed on the "back burner."

Gunn cited the complexity of the project as a major hurdle, noting that it's the "hardest" of the announced projects. He pointed to the success of Amazon's The Boys as a contributing factor, explaining that The Authority needs to be carefully crafted to stand out in a landscape influenced by similar themes and characters. Additionally, Gunn mentioned the challenge of integrating The Authority into the broader DCU narrative, especially with other characters and storylines already in development.

Despite these setbacks, one character from The Authority, The Engineer / Angela Spica, is set to appear in the DCU's kickstarter film, Superman. The Engineer, known for her formidable powers including self-duplication, technopathy, and genius-level intellect, adds a significant element to the DCU.

The Authority isn't the only project facing difficulties. Gunn also mentioned that Waller, a spinoff from his HBO Max series Peacemaker, has encountered some setbacks. On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a priority with active development underway, including the writing of its pilot.

Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is taking a patient approach, waiting for acclaimed director James Mangold to be ready to helm the project after his commitment to other films, including A Complete Unknown and the upcoming Star Wars movie Dawn of the Jedi. Safran emphasized that Swamp Thing is not crucial to the overarching DCU story, a sentiment echoed by Gunn.
