Cardinals Study Conclave Film for Real-Life Papal Election Insights

Edward Berger’s gripping papal drama Conclave captivated audiences last year, unveiling the intricate rituals of a papal election rarely seen by the public. As Cardinals worldwide prepare for an actual conclave, the film’s influence is evident, with some religious leaders turning to it for guidance.

A papal cleric involved in the conclave, speaking to Politico, noted that Berger’s film—featuring Ralph Fiennes as the dean of the College of Cardinals—is considered “strikingly accurate” by some Cardinals. The cleric added that “several [Cardinals] have viewed it in theaters.”

Following Pope Francis’ passing in late April, just months after the film’s release, the conclave process began. This week, 133 senior clerics from across the globe will gather in the Sistine Chapel to vote for the next global leader of Catholicism.

Most of the Cardinals assembling in Rome on Wednesday, May 7, were appointed by Pope Francis and are new to the conclave process. For many, especially those from smaller, remote parishes, the film offers valuable insight into a ritual they have never experienced.
