Batman Podcast Launches New Companion Series

May 01,2025 Author: Alexis

Superhero comics are transcending their traditional boundaries, inspiring not only blockbuster movies and TV shows but also engaging podcasts and audio dramas. DC Comics has launched its most ambitious podcast project yet with the debut of *DC High Volume: Batman*, a series dedicated to bringing some of the Dark Knight's most iconic comic book stories to life in audio format. However, to fully appreciate this expansive universe, listeners should not miss out on the companion show integrated into the main *DC High Volume* feed. Hosted by writer and journalist Coy Jandreau, these episodes delve into the creation of the series, featuring interviews with the cast, crew, and the original comic creators who inspired *DC High Volume: Batman*. The inaugural companion episode, set to release on Thursday, April 24, includes discussions with Batman voice actor Jason Spisak and DC's Creative Director of Animation & Audio Content, Mike Pallotta.

IGN had the opportunity to speak with Jandreau about how these companion episodes enhance the overall *DC High Volume: Batman* experience, offering fans a deeper dive into the world of Gotham.

What Is DC High Volume: Batman?

To fully grasp the significance of the companion series, it's essential to understand what *DC High Volume: Batman* entails. This series is a pioneering collaboration between DC and podcast giant Realm, presenting an ongoing audio drama that faithfully adapts iconic Batman comic books, starting with *Batman: Year One*. The series features Jason Spisak as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jay Paulson as Jim Gordon.

"DC High Volume is groundbreaking in its scale, offering a one-to-one adaptation of classic Batman comic books into an immersive audio experience," Jandreau explained to IGN. "It takes stories like *Batman: Year One* and *The Long Halloween*, turning them into a comprehensive audio journey with exceptional production design, sound effects, and talented voice actors. Each character, from villains to heroes, has a unique musical score, creating a new way to engage with these stories that have been part of my life since childhood."

The narrative arc begins with *Batman: Year One*, which explores Batman and Gordon's origins, and progresses into *The Long Halloween*, set in Batman's second year. The goal is to provide a continuous storyline that appeals to both die-hard fans and newcomers, using the seminal graphic novels as key chapters in Batman's saga.

"The series is designed to offer a new medium for experiencing the enduring Batman mythos," Jandreau said. "It serves as a starting point for those who may only know Batman from movies or animated series, while also revisiting the roots for fans like myself. The consistent use of voice actors and the evolution of the story through these classic tales ensure a cohesive and growing universe."

For Jandreau, a lifelong comic enthusiast, the transition of these stories into an audio format adds a new dimension without detracting from the original art. "Listening to these stories evokes emotions and experiences in a fresh way," he noted. "It's not about subtracting from the comics but enhancing them with audio. You can enjoy these episodes on their own, while driving, or even alongside the comics for a multi-sensory experience. Each approach offers something different, yet they all enrich the comic's narrative."

The High Volume Companion Series

Jandreau's companion series serves as an insightful extension to *DC High Volume: Batman*, focusing on the production process and the challenges of adapting comic books for audio. Available in both audio and video formats on the *DC High Volume: Batman* feed, the first episode launches on April 24, following the debut of *Batman: The Long Halloween*.

"The project has been in development for years, and there was always an intention to showcase the incredible talent behind the scenes," Jandreau shared. "From voice actors to composers, and even the original writers and artists, it's crucial for listeners to connect with these creative minds."

Jandreau's role in the *DC Studio Showcase* video series made him an ideal candidate to explore the making of *DC High Volume: Batman*. "My work on *DC Studio Showcase*, which covers the studio side of DC's world-building efforts, led to this opportunity," he said. "It's an honor to focus on comics, my true passion, and explore new ways to adapt them."

In the first companion episode, Jandreau discusses with Jason Spisak the intricacies of voicing Batman, particularly the evolution of the character's voice throughout different interactions. "It's fascinating to hear how Batman's voice develops and changes depending on who he's talking to," Jandreau teased. "From his conversations with Gordon to those with Alfred, and even the internal dialogue as Bruce Wayne transforms into Batman, each aspect adds depth to the character."

The format of the companion series is designed to align with key emotional and plot-driven moments from the main series. "It's not about following the comic issues sequentially," Jandreau explained. "Instead, we focus on significant moments that resonate with both the interviewees and the audience, adding context and enhancing the overall experience."

Drawing inspiration from various interview formats, Jandreau aims to blend the in-depth style of *Inside the Actors Studio*, the nuanced questioning of *Hot Ones*, and the lively energy of classic late-night talk shows. "I wanted to create a show that feels both informative and engaging, combining the best elements of these formats," he said.

The Future of DC High Volume: Batman

Looking forward, Jandreau has a list of creators he hopes to feature on the series, including Jeph Loeb, the writer of *The Long Halloween*, and Jim Lee, his collaborator on *Batman: Hush*. "Jim Lee's creative oversight and his own artistic contributions are incredibly inspiring," Jandreau said. "His insights into the stories he's helped create are invaluable."

Jandreau has also met Loeb at conventions and is eager to explore his influence on Batman's narrative framework. "Jeph Loeb's work forms the backbone of many classic Batman adaptations, and I'm looking forward to a deep dive into his creative process," he added.

Tom King, who penned a significant Batman run from 2016-2019, is another creator on Jandreau's wish list. "King's unique perspective, shaped by his CIA background, adds a fascinating layer to his portrayal of Batman," Jandreau noted. "His work on Batman's relationship with Catwoman and his exploration of Bruce Wayne's pain and growth are aspects I'm keen to discuss."

Jandreau's ultimate goal is to foster a positive space for Batman fans amidst the often contentious online environment. "The internet can be a hostile place, especially within fandoms," he said. "But there's so much passion for these stories that have thrived for decades. I want this series to be a beacon of positivity, welcoming both die-hard fans and newcomers to the world of Batman comics, ensuring it's a space free of gatekeeping."
