Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, signaling the last major update for the game. Following the release, BG3 experienced a notable increase in player engagement, climbing just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now seen a jump to over 169,000 players.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated the surge in player numbers on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing it to the robust mod support that allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It was previously announced that Larian Studios would be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative avenues.

In light of this, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been a labor of love for the developers. This update brings a wealth of new content, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play capabilities, and much more. Compared to the earlier announcement, the final patch notes boast an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished end to BG3’s lifecycle.

Larian Studios has gone above and beyond to enhance BG3, as evidenced by the numerous fixes and updates in this final version. Although this marks their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game’s modding community.
