Sony Pictures is developing a new film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 science fiction novel, Starship Troopers. Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, is attached to write and direct. This project is a fresh adaptation of the source material, unrelated to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 satirical film of the same name. The news was confirmed by multiple reputable Hollywood sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety.

This development is particularly interesting given Sony's concurrent work on a live-action adaptation of Helldivers, a PlayStation Studios game heavily inspired by Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. Both projects explore similar themes of military conflict and societal structures, albeit with potentially differing tones. While Verhoeven's film satirized Heinlein's novel, Blomkamp's adaptation aims for a more faithful interpretation of the book's themes, which are significantly different from the film's portrayal.
Neither the new Starship Troopers film nor the Helldivers adaptation has a confirmed release date. Blomkamp's previous project for Sony was Gran Turismo, another video game adaptation.
