If you're building a new gaming PC and seeking the best gaming processor, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D AM5 desktop processor is currently your top choice, now available on Amazon for its retail price of $489. This processor stands out as the premier gaming CPU on the market, outshining even the more expensive Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.

AMD's X3D series processors are tailored for gaming, leveraging AMD's 3D V-Cache technology to outperform even the highest-end standard CPUs from AMD. While capable of multitasking, rendering, and content creation, their limited core count makes them less ideal for those tasks. Priced at $489, the 9800X3D is not only $100 cheaper than the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K ($589) but also $160 less than the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, yet it surpasses both in gaming performance. Unless you're loyal to Intel or still using AM4 and reluctant to upgrade, the 9800X3D is the clear winner for your next gaming PC.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Review by Jacqueline Thomas
"The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivers exceptional gaming performance, making it a superior choice over other recent processors like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K or Ryzen 9 9900X. If you're building a rig with a high-end graphics card, the 9800X3D will maximize your GPU's potential."
In addition to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD introduced two higher-end Ryzen 9 models in the Zen 5 "X3D" lineup: the 9950X3D, priced at $699, and the 9900X3D, priced at $599. These processors are currently the best gaming chips available from both AMD and Intel, though they are out of stock. For gamers on a budget, the 9800X3D remains the best value, allowing you to allocate funds elsewhere. However, creators with larger budgets and a dual focus on gaming and content creation will appreciate the significant performance boost offered by the Ryzen 9 processors, thanks to their increased core count and cache.

Creative professionals who also crave top-tier gaming performance need look no further than the 9950X3D. With a max boost clock of 5.7GHz, 16 cores, 32 threads, and 144MB of L2-L3 cache, this CPU offers a marginal gaming performance edge over the 9800X3D but significantly outperforms it in productivity tasks, outpacing anything Intel has to offer.
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Review by Jacqueline Thomas
"The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D is arguably the most powerful gaming processor available, yet it isn't the right choice for everyone. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D, priced at $479, is sufficient for most gamers. The 9950X3D is tailored for those who both game and use creative software like Photoshop and Premiere, where it offers a 15% performance boost over the 9800X3D. For a pure gaming build, consider saving the extra $220 for a better graphics card."
AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D AM5 Desktop Processor
For those balancing creative work with gaming on a budget, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D strikes a balance. It features a max boost clock of 5.5GHz, 12 cores, 24 threads, and 140MB of L2-L3 cache. While we haven't reviewed this model yet, its specs suggest it will fall between the 9950X3D and 9800X3D in productivity and multi-core performance, with gaming performance expected to be comparable to the other two.
