Marvel Rivals Dev Faces Social Media Pressure, Announces Major Season 3 Changes

May 18,2025 Author: Lucas

NetEase Games has announced a significant shift in its post-launch strategy for Marvel Rivals, aiming to shorten the duration of its seasons and introduce at least one new hero each month. This change is designed to keep the live service game engaging and maintain momentum among its player base.

The new roadmap was hinted at in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which outlined that Season 2 will kick off on April 11 with the introduction of the new Vanguard, Emma Frost. Mid-season, players can look forward to Ultron, though his specific class will be disclosed nearer to his release. Both heroes are set to bring fresh abilities to the game, but the real transformation in how heroes impact gameplay is slated for Season 3.

In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which does not yet have a set release date, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to two months. This adjustment will accelerate the pace of major content updates while sticking to their commitment of releasing a new hero every half-season. This means shorter waiting periods for new heroes following Emma Frost and Ultron.

Guangyun Chen, the creative director of Marvel Rivals, shared in the Dev Vision video, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media discussions have added pressure to keep the game exciting, and to a certain extent, we agree." Chen emphasized NetEase's goal to keep the audience's excitement at the level seen during the game's opening months, stating, "the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning."

NetEase aims to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. After extensive internal discussions and evaluations, the company will adjust its systems to accommodate the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will affect players will be shared before Season 3 launches.

Just hours ago, NetEase unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, which will transition from a vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with more information to be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Marvel Rivals launched to great success in December, amassing 10 million players in just three days. Available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, the game saw a peak of 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Season 1 in January attracted an impressive 644,269 concurrent players, ranking Marvel Rivals as the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform. However, concurrent player numbers have declined since then, prompting NetEase's roadmap adjustments. Despite this, Marvel Rivals remains a top-played game on Steam, and the upcoming Season 2 and Season 3 are expected to rejuvenate player interest.
