Marvel Rivals' Popularity Marred by Bot Concerns
Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games' new hero shooter, faces growing player suspicion regarding the prevalence of bots in its matches. The game, launched in December to widespread acclaim for its style and roster of iconic Marvel characters (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, etc.), boasts hundreds of thousands of daily Steam players (via SteamDB). However, this success is overshadowed by persistent concerns about AI opponents in Quickplay matches.
Many players report encountering matches populated by low-level AI opponents, sometimes even alongside AI teammates. The suspected trigger for these bot-filled matches is a string of losses, a tactic potentially designed to prevent player frustration and maintain quick matchmaking. However, NetEase's lack of transparency on this issue fuels the controversy. The company has yet to officially comment (IGN has reached out for comment).
Social media is rife with player discussions attempting to identify bot matches. Suspect indicators include unusual, repetitive in-game behavior, similar player names (often single words in all caps or split names), and, most notably, enemy profiles labeled "restricted."
The frustration stems from the lack of player choice. As one Reddit user stated, "NetEase does not give you a choice" when entering Quickplay. This lack of control makes it difficult for players to practice new heroes effectively, as they can't distinguish between genuine skill improvement and artificially inflated performance against bots.
While bot usage in multiplayer games isn't new (Fortnite players have voiced similar concerns), the situation in Marvel Rivals has sparked calls for a bot toggle or complete bot removal. Some players, however, utilize bot matches for achievement completion.
The author confirms encountering a suspicious Quickplay match exhibiting several reported red flags: stiff player movement, similar names, and restricted profiles for both teammates and opponents. NetEase's response to these concerns remains pending.
Despite this controversy, NetEase's future plans for Marvel Rivals remain ambitious. Season 1: Eternal Night Falls, featuring the Fantastic Four, is imminent, along with a promise of at least one new hero per half-season and a new Peter Parker Advanced Suit 2.0 skin later this month. The ongoing bot debate, however, casts a shadow on the game's otherwise promising trajectory.
